Prosthodontics is the branch of dentistry involving the restoration of natural teeth and the placement of natural-looking substitute or prosthetic teeth. Prosthodontics is one of the dental specialties recognized by the Canadian Dental association. A prosthodontist's professional education includes several years of additional training after dental school in an accredited advanced dental education program.

What: Role of Prosthodontist

The Prosthodontist functions in a capacity similar to that of specialists in Oral Surgery, Periodontics, Endodontics, and the other dental specialties.

The Prosthodontist accepts referrals for the management of special problems of a prosthodontic nature, or on a consultation basis when several opinions are advisable to formulate a diagnosis and/or treatment plan. Often the medical community may refer to a Prosthodontist for the care and management of traumatic injuries to the oral cavity and head and neck.

Given the limited number of Prosthodontists in practice, by far, the majority of prosthodontic services in this country are rendered by general practitioners of dentistry. The Prosthodontist is not in competition with those who practice general dentistry. Rather he/she is a supportive specialist who meets the need and desire for a dentist with advanced training in the management of many of the complexities that present in restorative dentistry.

The general dentist must be prepared to manage many varieties of dental problems in the course of the day, whereas limitation of a practice to a specialty area inherently permits devotion of more time, skill, and judgment to certain limited tasks. In the interest of conservation of time, management, and ultimate success, the general dentist will many times select to refer patients with particular problems to specialists such as Oral Surgeons, Periodontists, Endodontists and Prosthodontists.
